Purpose of Activating Both Declarative/
Non-Declarative Memory Systems in the Brain
Purpose of Using a Teaching Methodology that Addresses both Declarative (Direct Instruction [DI] + Strategy Instruction [SI]) and Non-declarative (Bilateral Arm and Leg movements) Learning Systems in the Brain
|
Direct (explicit) instruction and strategy instruction require students to use the medial temporal lobes or memorization (declarative) part of the brain whereas specific bilateral arm and leg movements help students use the basal ganglia (non-declarative) brain system. Engaging both brain systems is particularly helpful for students with reading disabilities because students with learning disabilities often fail to learn effectively using the medial temporal lobes alone.

in May to 314 sight words the following
March. Most import-antly, it allowed stud-ents that are used to failing to succeed.”

“The effects on my students were all very positive. Even students
who could not read after a number of years in school and had given up trying, began enjoying their success. Their feeling of self-worth and confidence blossomed.”
