Reading Instruction: Governmental Standards

The Beginning Reading What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) review focuses on reading interventions for students in grades K-3 that are intended to increase skills in alphabetics (phonemic awareness, phonological awareness, letter recognition, print awareness and phonics), reading fluency, comprehension (vocabulary and reading comprehension), or general reading achievement.

The Reading First (Click Here for PDF) program focuses on putting proven methods of early reading instruction in classrooms. Through Reading First, states and districts receive support to apply scientifically-based reading research—and the proven instructional and assessment tools consistent with this research—to ensure that all children learn to read well by the end of third grade.  According to What Works Clearinghouse, the “gold standard” of scientifically-based research is the randomized controlled trial (Click here for PDF).

“One student went from 16 sight words
in May to 314 sight words the following
March. Most import-antly, it allowed stud-ents that are used to failing to succeed.”

Allison Warsanen

“...turning our Danny completely around in
one month. He was supposed to repeat first grade but when the school saw what he could do, he was pro-moted. Now the teach-er says he is one of the best readers in the second grade!”

Nancy Reid

“The effects on my students were all very positive. Even students
who could not read after a number of years in school and had given up trying, began enjoying their success. Their feeling of self-worth and confidence blossomed.”

Sharon Lamb

“...(our child) couldn’t read a word. He took your course from March through summer and was reading wond-erfully. Now get this - he just finished third grade with straight A’s and was #1 in the FCAT. He is being test-ed for gifted this fall. Your program is a miracle in our lives.”
