Reading Instruction: Governmental Standards
The Beginning Reading What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) review focuses on reading interventions for students in grades K-3 that are intended to increase skills in alphabetics (phonemic awareness, phonological awareness, letter recognition, print awareness and phonics), reading fluency, comprehension (vocabulary and reading comprehension), or general reading achievement.
The Reading First (Click Here for PDF) program focuses on putting proven methods of early reading instruction in classrooms. Through Reading First, states and districts receive support to apply scientifically-based reading research—and the proven instructional and assessment tools consistent with this research—to ensure that all children learn to read well by the end of third grade. According to What Works Clearinghouse, the “gold standard” of scientifically-based research is the randomized controlled trial (Click here for PDF).
